Styling Series: Part One

Whether you’re a minimalist, or love having a huge walk-in closet, every wardrobe should have these in it.

Basics.

Without basics, it doesn’t matter how many pieces of clothing you have, or how much money you’ve spent putting together your dream closet. You’re still going to be left staring into that mass of fabric thinking, “I have nothing to wear.”

To get you started, I’ve put together a few of my favorite basics for you. Rule of thumb when looking for basics, is to look for neutrals. Don’t get me wrong, it’s perfectly fine to have a closet full of color and patterns. But none of those things will “match” without basics.

Tank tops/Camisole

Camisoles are good for summer time, or for layering in the cooler weather. You can pair them with a good pair of jeans, a cute skirt, or under a cozy flannel.

SHORT/LONG SLEEVE TEES

Next comes a good tee. Short and long sleeve. Just like a cami, these are essential for layering. Again, they can be worn by themselves, paired with a good denim, or layered with a cardigan or jacket in the cooler months.

I like to get the three basic colors: white, black, and gray. From there you can pan out into stripes, or a leopard print (I like to consider these neutrals that are also easy to pair with just about anything).

The reason I say short and long sleeve is mostly for temperature reasons. Short sleeves (or even a wide tank top) can sometimes lay nicer under certain cardigans/sweaters than a long sleeve top would. Long sleeves are nice for the chillier temperatures, and are also the perfect layering piece for a cozy vest!

If you want to go further into tops, follow the same basic rule. Stick with neutral colors before getting into the more “fun” pieces. Make sure you have a few good cardigans, sweaters, a vest, and maybe even a jean and/or leather jacket.

SHORTS/SKIRTS/JEANS

As for bottoms, its pretty easy. Blue, black, and white. Skinny jeans are all the rave right now and I don’t see them going out of style anytime soon. Get yourself a pair in these three colors, and boom… you’re set. I myself do not own a pair of white jeans yet. Not for the lack of trying, I just haven’t found a pair I am in love with yet.

This rule applies for shorts as well. If you have these three colors, you can match with anything! And don’t feel like you need to stop there. Grab some skirts and leggings! (Still sticking to the neutral rule). Denim skirt, leather skirt, leather leggings, black spandex, black shorts, blue shorts, white shorts, white skirt, snakeskin skirt, etc. Starting to catch on?

Now that you got all the basics, you’re probably wondering “Where do I go from here? How do I make these into outfits?” Well, I’ll tell you! In my next blog post. Sign up for email alerts so you don’t miss out! I will be telling you all the good details on what shoes to wear with what, when to do a front tuck, what jewelry goes with what outfit, and much more!

XOXO,
